Americans are always wondering why other nations hate them. Unfortunately, Americans have some very wrong ideas about why. No, it is not because anyone is jealous of you. It will surprise you to know that lots of people all over the world actually like their own countries.
No, it is not because you are “free” or have liberty. Guess what, LOADS of other countries are free too. People are walking around doing whatever the hell they want because it is their damn country, it’s not just you.
No, it’s not because they are desperate to come to America. Surprise, surprise, but lots of people are completely content to live in their own country and enjoy living there.
People in other countries hate America for two reasons.
The first reason is external, while the second is internal.
The external reason is obvious: America is a bully, and Americans are bullies.
When relating to other countries, America just barks out orders and believes it has some sort of divine right to tell other sovereign nations what to do, when they can and cannot breathe, and whether they should even be existing on the Earth. When relating to people from other countries, Americans believe that everything should go their way, and that only their way is the correct way, and that people from other countries should go to great lengths to inconvenience themselves in order to make Americans comfortable but Americans NEVER think about inconveniencing themselves to make others more comfortable. They expect everyone to speak English and they scoff if you don’t know things that are common in American society or popular culture while completely forgetting how ignorant they are of aspects of other cultures and languages. The Ugly American is very much alive and well.
The second (internal) reason only dawns on people from other countries when they enter America.
It is this: Racism is the national RELIGION of America. Although they may deny it or take offense at being called racist, there is nothing that Americans indulge in so joyfully as discrimination and unfounded and unwarranted racial aggressions against people of other races but most especially in varying degrees according to the invisible race hierarchy that they have set up in their country.
In America, it is the order of the day. In fact, it is simply de rigeur and the more subtly you can do it so that you get away with it, the better.
People from other countries who come here hate America because the racism in this country sucks away at the soul. This is not to say that there are not flaming racists in other countries or that discrimination exists only in America, but it’s presence here is constant, oppressive, and completely inescapable. It makes one wonder how non-white Americans are able to live daily with such indignities and yet they do. And then it makes you angry to see people treated the way they are for nothing more than being themselves. And then just when you are about to empathise with them, they turn around and do it to you, and all your compassion and empathy evaporates.
I honestly don’t think that racism in this country will ever end, and I honestly don’t think that American/America will ever stop being bullies (at least until China starts bullying them).
Either way, these are the two main reasons (in my opinion) that people outside America or who are non-Americans hate Americans. (of course this does not include people who hate America for ideological reasons - I’m talking about why normal everyday people from other countries have a poor opinion of America or Americans).
